What’s your favorite exercise? It could be burpees, kettlebell swings, mace swinging, Jiu-jitsu, or what have you. Whatever you’re into, you can’t deny feeling one thing when you’re doing something you love — you lose track of time.
I was reading Mihály Csíkszentmihályi’s book entitled “Finding Flow.” In it, I learned that whenever we do something that’s both challenging and fun (like a BarraFIT Strength or Flex session), some interesting things happen.
We lose track of time.
We become entirely engrossed in what we’re doing.
All comparison and ego-driven thoughts go out the window or get left off the mats.
Wouldn’t it be great to experience all these in your fitness goals and life? With BarraFIT, we’re more than a fitness studio. As we inspire the athlete within you, we make sure you’re getting a kick out of the experience as well!
The Work-Play Balance
We’ve all got responsibilities. This is without question. However, without making fitness one of our pursuits, we aren’t doing ourselves any favors. In fact, we’ll be setting ourselves up for health problems and mental stagnation down the road.
We don’t need more work at the office, nor do we need the next best thing in fitness. All we need is balance. Granted, finding the sweet spot between what we do for a living and what we do to stay alive longer can be tough.
However, any activity we love can easily find its way into our lifestyle no matter how preoccupied we are. It can be work. It can be fitness.
Let’s face it — it’s easier to make crushing our fitness goals fun than trying to do it with our nine-to-fives.
Successful Fitness Goals are the Result of Play
As I look at athletes of the Gracie Barra in Brazil, I’m always nothing short of impressed. I’m in awe of their physiques as well as their athletic prowess. Believe it or not, not a single one of them will call their sessions or open mat “training.”
Very often, we throw this word around the mats — toque. In English, this means to play. Back at Gracie Barra, we set goals and pursue them. Moreso, we pursue them in a way that it doesn’t seem like we’re training.
Instead, we try new escapes or submissions. We tank some of them (I have). We laugh. We have fun.
What’s the result? Over time, the result is a well-conditioned world-class Gracie Barra grappler. Furthermore, we tailor our BarraFIT sessions to achieve the same effects with our athletes.
The origins of BarraFIT can be traced back to the strength and conditioning training that was part of the experience of training at Gracie Barra in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in the 1990s. Master Carlos Gracie Jr. believed his students should be in good condition and encouraged them to complement their Jiu-Jitsu training with habits to improve their cardio, strength, and flexibility.
BarraFIT is strongly connected with our mission of teaching Jiu-Jitsu for Everyone. We proudly say BarraFit is for everyone.
At BarraFIT, we’ll help you set and crush your fitness goals. Most importantly, we’ll ensure that you have fun throughout the process — so much that it becomes a part of your lifestyle!
Love for the Process Goes a Long Way in Fitness
There’s that saying about Rome not being built in a day. This is definitely the truth in fitness.
This is a point I remind new BarraFIT athletes about. It’s also one that the more seasoned BarraFIT athletes know. It’s for this reason that I think loving the process is crucial to success.
If you love doing what you do, the results will take care of themselves. It doesn’t matter how long it will take to get the results.
A big part of how we inspire the athlete within is making the process fun. At BarraFIT, any session you show up to can be the most enjoyable and rewarding 45 minutes of your day.
